Gurmehar Kaur remark: Sehwag defends his own post

New Delhi, Mar 1 (IBNS): Having triggered a controversy for supposedly mocking Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag on Wednesday explained and defended his previous post on Twitter and said it was an attempt to be 'facetious rather than one to bully anyone'.

He said Gurmehar Kaur has the right to express her views.

Sehwag, who is quite regular on Twitter, posted: "My tweet was an attempt to be facetious rather than one to bully anyone over their opinion. Agreement or disagreement wasn't even a factor."

"She has a right to express her views and anyone who threatens her with violence or rape is the lowest form of life," he said.

Sehwag said: "Everyone has a right to express their views without being bullied or threatened. Gurmehar Kaur or the Phogat sisters."

On Sunday, he had tweeted:“I didn’t score two triple centuries, my bat did”, along with the message, “Bat me hai Dum ! #BharatJaisiJagahNahi”.

The post had triggered a controversy.

All this came after violence on the Ramjas College campus where students  and teachers clashed with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members, who had disrupted a  two-day seminar over the participation of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students, Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid.

The ABVP alleged that Khalid is "anti-national," and his participation in the seminar can not be accepted.

Days after the incident, Gurmehar launched her online campaign against ABVP which resulted in a political slugfest among rival political parties and earned her both kudos and criticism.

On Monday, Kaur approached the Delhi Women's Commission alleging she was being threatened with rape on social media for her campaign.
