Image of cricket not tarnished: Srinivasan

Chennai, Dec 1 (IBNS): Though facing the Supreme Court displeasure over his action on the IPL spot fixing and betting scandal, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president-in-exile N. Srinivasan Monday said the scam has not tarnished the image of Indian cricket, said media reports.

"I don't think the image of Indian cricket has been hit," he was quoted telling media at an event of the ICC, of which he is the chairman. He refused to comment on the IPL scam calling it sub-judice.

He also declined to comment on captain M.S. Dhoni’s role in his company India Cements Ltd, which owns Chennai Super Kings.  He only said "why should I" when asked if he would ask Dhoni to resign from India Cements.

His lawyer Kapil Sibal earlier told the apex court that charges of inaction against him are untrue.

The court was told that he "acted with speed when I got to know about allegations against my son - in- law."

In perhaps the biggest blow to  Srinivasan, the Supreme court on Thursday last said that the IPL team Chennai Super Kings should be "terminated without further enquiry" from the Indian Premier League and also wanted fresh Board elections with all those involved with the IPL scam stepping aside.

The move may end Srini's hope of contesting election and return to the helm of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The court made it clear to the BCCI that if it wanted to take action as per the Mudgal panel report, only the new Board could do so.

Otherwise, the Mudgal panel itself could be asked to suggest what punishment it could impose on those found guilty based on its own findings.

The annual general meeting of the BCCI is scheduled on Dec 17 where Srinivasan, who is already the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), is seeking another term.

Srinivasan was seeking a clean chit from the Supreme Court to contest the BCCI elections and win another term as president.

Suspended BCCI President petitioned that he may be restored to his position as BCCI chief and be allowed to function.

The Mudgal Committee, which submitted its report on Nov 17, had indicted Meiyappan and Rajasthan Royals franchise co-owner Raj Kundra of betting and confirmed their role in their teams but cleared Srinivasan of match fixing and scuttling the probe.

The probe report has charged Srinivasan with "covering up" Meiyappan's role.
