Test: India 259/4 at stumps
While India lost the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan (12) early, Vijay continued to hold the other end strongly.
Cheteshwar Pujara (38) joined him as they added 73 runs in the second wiket partnership to take the scorecard from 33 for one to 106.
James Anderson picked up Pujara's wicket to break the partnership while Stuart Broad took Virat Kohli (1) to reduce the side to 107 for three.
Ajinkya Rahane and Vijay added another 71 runs partnership to stabilise the innings after quick loss of wickets.
After Rahane perished, it was skipper MS Dhoni (50*) who came to the crease and both added 81 runs in the fifth to end the day at 259 for four.
Vijay has hit 20 boundaries and a six in his much needed matured knock in the foreign soil.
Anderson has picked up two wickets for England.
India earlier won the toss and elected to bat first.
