US Open: Djokovic-Williams-Nadal enter 2nd round, Ivanovic-Nishikori make shock exit

New York, Sept 1 (IBNS) World number one and top seed Novak Djokovic breezed past his opponent, Brazilian J Souza 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 to enter the second round of the US Open tournament in style, here on Monday.

He will next play against A Haider-Maurer in the second round.

Serena Williams, the top seed in the women’s singles, who looks for her  first calendar grand slam inched closer  to her dream as her opponent Vitalia Diatchenko could not play more than 30 minutes due to an injury she sustained while training before the match.

The score remained 6-0, 2-0 in Williams’ favour when the Russian decided to quits, handing the current world number one the much needed victory.

Serena will play against Dutch player Kiki Bartens in the second round.

Not everything went as planned in a topsy-turvy day for the players as the fourth seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan  failed to make the cut.Playing  against the unseeded B Paire of France, he struggled till the fifth set the match was stretched to. Finally the Frenchmen kept his nerve to clinch the tie  6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 7(8)-6(6), 6-4.

Another shock exit was Ana Ivanovic’s 3-6, 6-3, 3-6 loss to D Cibulkova.

Unlike Djokovic, Rafael Nadal did not cruise into the second round with a straight set-win, but he put up a strong performance against  B Coric of Croatia, posting a 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win.

The Spaniard will lock horns with D Schwartzman of Argentina in the second round.
