Jakarta/Xinhua: Massive floods hitting the Indonesian capital of Jakarta and its peripheral areas have killed at least nine people, a disaster mitigation agency has said Wednesday.

Spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Agus Wibowo said in a statement that heavy rains and overflowing rivers since New Year's Eve had engulfed at least 90 neighborhoods.

State-owned electricity firm PLN has temporarily shut down electricity in 724 flood-hit areas in the greater metropolitan area to prevent any electricity-related accidents.

The disaster has displaced thousands of people and disrupted public transportation systems in Jakarta which is home to more than 10 million people, and some 30 million people living in its surrounding areas.
