Abhishek Banerjee, Kolkata Police clash over removal of TMC billboards from Camac Street office

Banerjee objected to the action and questioned the officials about the legal basis for removing the billboards.

He asked the team to produce a copy of the order authorising the removal as well as the complaint letter on which the action was reportedly based.

The TMC leader alleged that the police personnel were attempting to enter the office premises without proper authorisation.

Banerjee claimed that the police and KMC officials eventually left the premises after they failed to produce the documents he had requested.

Banerjee also said that the officials had sought to enter the office and said he would approach the Calcutta High Court against the police personnel involved in the incident.

The confrontation took place as the civic authorities and police moved to remove the TMC billboards from the party leader's office premises.

Banerjee questioned the authority under which the officials had arrived and sought documentation supporting their action.

Speaking to reporters after the incident, Banerjee accused the KMC and Kolkata Police of acting at the direction of the BJP government in Bengal.

He also alleged that the state government led by Suvendu Adhikari was using government agencies and institutions to target political opponents.

Banerjee said civic and police authorities should not be deciding which political party could display a particular number of billboards.

"The police and the KMC officials have forgotten that they are being paid by the taxpayers' money and not by the BJP," Banerjee told journalists.

He further alleged that government officials had no authority to determine "which political party will put up how many billboards".

Policemen and KMC staff, however, entered the building later and removed the billboard from the top of the multi-storey.

According to the latest reports, heavy police force have been deployed outside the office in south Kolkata, while at least one supporter of Abhishek Banerjee has been detained for obstructing police officers from performing their duties.
