Water level of Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam reaches close to earlier overflow mark
Vadodara, Jul 22 (UNI) The water level in the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Dam reservoir, situated in Kevadiya of Narmada district in central Gujarat has seen a significant rise of almost a meter in last 3 days and reached quite closer to the earlier overflow mark.
An official at the Narmada flood control unit in Vadodara said on Monday that the water level was at 121.74 m at 8 pm this evening.
It was just 18 cm below the earlier overflow mark of 121. 92 m.
The water level in this all important reservoir which was termed as the life-line of the water supply in this western state is still rising with inflow at 22009 cusec exceeding the outflow of 14704 cusec.
It has seen a rise of almost a meter (98 cm to be precise) since July 19 when it was 120.76m and started rising due to increased inflow caused by the operation of hydel power units at Indira Sagar dam in Madhya Pradesh.
The live storage has also increased and become 1532 Million Cubic Meter (MCM) which was over 26% of the total live storage capacity of the reservoir.
An official of the SSNNL said that there was enough water for meeting the drinking and other domestic needs of the around 167 towns and more than 10000 villages that depend on our water supply.
The overflow mark of the dam has been raised from 121.92 to 138.48 after the installation and closure of 30 sluice gates in 2017.
